A major problem I noticed on campus is peoples' mouths. Not a hour goes by that I don't hear someone shoot out the f-word, the d-word, or the r-word. People just say them like it is no big deal. I am sure that God sent me to this college for a reason and one of the reasons he did was to make the campus more aware of how much the r-word hurts. Words can hurt and they really need to think about what they are saying. This morning the Ringer is on and a girl from another room came in and was telling me about how much she liked the movie then she said, "I wonder how those r****** were able to remember all those lines, that seems like it would be hard." How I resisted from yelling at her was truly a miracle. The T.H.R.I.V.E floor is in my building which is special education students that are given the opportunity to attend college for 2 years. People look at them like they are aliens or foreign. I noticed some people did offer to help them and sit with them but this is another example of how much people don't notice the world outside themselves. I only hope that I can reach out to them this year and the rest of the time at college. Hopefully at UCM people with with intellectual disabilities and those without can be unified. Now I want to explain to those that use the word my reasoning behind why you shouldn't use it. Even if the r-word isn't trying to be used in a mean way,it is still mean. You are still implying the meaning when used. If you have ever spent a day or even an hour with someone with intellectual disabilities you would see how much it hurts them. It's the same as saying something is gay or any other offensive word. Here are 2 commercials that really explain it all : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWS0GVOQPs0 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T549VoLca_Q. Please next time you go to use the word just think about it. Say something nice or don't say anything at all.
